Mixtape Showdown #8

Update!!!

We're calling this one at 3:5s EST. Your winner, by split decision, SPF!

* * * * *

It's like that time when the jukebox was playing that song, you know that song, that one that reminds you of that song you like?

Challenge #8
Theme: Same Same, But Different

Challenger: SPF

Notes:
The theme is to have songs that sound like you've heard them before but are slightly different. I tried not to limit it too much so the person who has to match just needs music that fits one of the criteria:
-Is a cover
-Is an original with a better known cover
-Song samples an older work
-Artist sounds like an older generation (RE: Amy Winehouse and Michael Buble would be great fits if you had the courage to put them on a mixtape!)

Playlist:
1 - Al Green - I Want To Hold Your Hand
2 - Johnny Copeland - Tumblin' Dice
3 - Mayer Hawthorne - Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'
4 - Marcia Griffiths - Band of Gold
5- Alice Russell - Seven Nation Army
6 - The Professionals - (Theme From) The Godfather
7 - William Bell - Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye
8 - The Four Tops - Walk Away Renee
9 - Grovesnor - Nitemoves
10 - The Jackson 5 - You've Really Got A Hold On Me
11 - White Town - Your Woman
12 - Patti Drew - Hard to Handle
13 - James Hunter - Carina
14 Bettye LaVette - All My Love

VERSUS:

Champion: Eric Jones

Title: Old is the New New

Notes:
Here are some of my favorite songs that have had renewed life over the decades. This is mostly a laid back mix but don't confuse the slower tempo for a lack of power: from the juggernaut riff of the Green Manalishi to Tina Turner's parental advisory ad libbing on I've Been Loving You Too Long, we find out that going through the ringer slowly ends up hurting more.

Playlist:
1. House of the Rising Sun - Frijid Pink
2. Dirty the Moocher - Ol' Dirty Bastard
3. I'm Your Man - Nick Cave
4. Because - Elliot Smith
5. Sketches of Spain (for Miles) - Buckethead
6. La Vie En Rose - Louis Armstrong
7. The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Pronged Crown) part 1 - The Melvins
8. The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Pronged Crown) part 2 - The Melvins
9. Brahms 3rd Symphony, Third Movement - The Mermen
10. Famous Blue Raincoat - Marissa Nadler
11. I've Been Loving You Too Long - Ike & Tina Turner
12. Lay Lady Lay - Ministry
13. Midnight Cowboy - Faith No More

  1. SPF, bonus points for the soul, and for the good Beatles cover. Negative points for making me listen to White Town.

Jones, extra bonus points for the Mermen, it was fantastic. But, negative points for the Beatles cover, not because it was bad, but because it is difficult to listen to Because without the rest of the second side of Abby Road following it. And, points for the ambition behind including a Lay Lady Lay cover, but those points get washed by it being this cover.

    Vote goes to SPF.

  5. King Buzzo (founder of Melvins) describes the Melvins' music as "Captain Beefheart playing heavy metal". That is a pretty lame; I feel like listening to the Melvins is more of a badge than something anyone actually enjoys doing. Not to mention that it is verboten to put two songs by the same band on one mix, let alone side-by-side.

    But points for the Mermen.

SPF's mix is something that is actually enjoyable to listen to, not too clever, and that Godfather track is just so bad-ass.

  7. JWF,

I agree with you that a mix shouldn't theoretically repeat artists, but I'm okay with it in a two-part scenario like Jones uses. I'm also okay with doubling up artists to start and end a mix, or to start two sides of an actual tape. (Who was that guy that was going to try to create a mix that has two sides?)

I certainly don't enjoy listening to The Melvins, something I've taken so much flak about over the years.

Still, you understand the theoretical underpinnings of the mixtape, and I hope you find it in your heart to submit a mix sometime soon.

  8. As much as I like the Lay Lady Lay cover (was a huge Ministry fan between Land of Rape And Honey and Dark Side Of The Spoon), I felt your tape didn't really flow song-to-song like SPF's.
